John Purcell
(August 15, 1843 – May 7, 1907)

John Purcell, a well known citizen of Fertile Township, died on Tuesday of last week, of heart failure. From an obituary notice in the Hanlontown News we glean that Mr. Purcell was born in Tipperary, Ireland, August 15, 1843, came to this country in 1866 and settled in Massachusetts. Two years later he was married to Miss Mary Kennedy. In 1879 they came west and settled at the present Purcell home in Fertile Township. Deceased is survived by a wife and eight children: James Purcell and Mrs. Minnie Oswold live on near-by farms, John Jr. resides near Bristol, Frank, Edward and Stacia are staying at home, and two married daughters have homes at Cluthier, Ia. and Silver Leaf, N. D., respectively. Mr. Purcell’s funeral was solemnized last Thursday, and interment made in the Bristol Cemetery. The writer once enjoyed Mr. Purcell’s hospitality and had reason to think him an able and exceedingly kind hearted man. Source – Worth County Index, Northwood, Iowa, Thurs., May 16, 1907, p.4
