Elton Carlyle Kuhlmann, 78, Northwood, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. A funeral service for Elton will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with military honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Connor Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Avenue South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.
Elton Carlyle Kuhlmann was born on November 2, 1932, in Mason City, the son of Harvey and Mildred Hazel (Stalheim) Kuhlmann. Elton was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood. Elton received his education in Northwood-Kensett Community School. He was united in marriage to Dora Ilse Weihe on February 21, 1955, in Germany when Elton was in the Air Force. Dora preceded him in death on September 23, 2004. Elton was inducted into the United States Air Force on February 21, 1952, and served his country honorably and faithfully until his discharge on August 22, 1956. After his discharge from the service, Elton came back home to Northwood, and worked for JD One Stop in Northwood, and also drove truck for Wally’s Trucking in Albert Lea, Minn., and Ruan Trucking in Mason City until is retirement. After his retirement Elton worked part time for Carroll George in Northwood. Elton enjoyed reading books, playing cards, and wintering in Texas with his special friend, Frances Coyle; but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends, and going to all his grandchildren’s sporting events. Elton was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and a member and past commander of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Patty (Ray) Darling of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dolores “Dee” (Mark) Johnson of Northwood, Mike Kuhlmann of Northwood, and Harry Kuhlmann of Northwood, three grandchildren, Travis Johnson of Iowa City, Carly Johnson of Mason City and Jimmy Crapo of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Audrey Coyle of Floyd and Kella Jean Lodge of Charles City; a special friend, Frances Coyle of Manly; as well as several nieces, nephews, many extended family members and friends. Elton was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dora; daughter, Barbara Borchert, who died on November 3, 1991; son-in-law, Larry Borchert; two brothers, Harvey and Luverne Kuhlmann; two brothers-in-law, Dean Cloyle and Jim Lodge; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kuhlmann.
