Ronald "Ron" Melvin Loken, 69, rural Northwood, died Saturday (April 9, 2011) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, as a result of a John Deere Gator accident. A funeral service for Ron was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with military graveside honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood. Visitation was held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.
Ronald Melvin Loken was born on June 1, 1941, on the family farm in rural Northwood, the son of Melvin and Alma (Stiehl) Loken. Ron was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Ron attended Northwood-Kensett Community school system, graduating from Northwood-Kensett High School in the Class of 1959. After his graduation, Ron enlisted in the Iowa National Guard and was with Company E, First Battle Group 133D Infantry and serviced his country faithfully and honorably until his discharge on Dec. 31, 1963. After his honorable discharge, Ron began farming west of Northwood, and continued to farm until his death. Ron was united in marriage to Linda Hempen on March 23, 1963, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and to this union two children were born, Rod and Robin. Ron enjoyed farming all of his life, making over 100 fishing trips, reading, traveling, raising Holstein cattle, buying and restoring two cylinder tractors, Bluegrass and Gospel music and festivals, and visiting with his many friends, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Ron was a member of First Lutheran Church in the Northwood, and was on the Co-Op Oil board for over 15 years. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Loken of Northwood; two children, Rod (Sue) Loken of Northwood, and Robin (Jay) Hopperstad of Northwood; his four grandchildren, Jacob and Casey Loken, and Marty and Laura Hopperstad; his sister, Marlene Petersen and husband Dub Graversen of Mason City; his special dog, Hunter; numerous nieces, nephews, as well as many other extended family members and friends. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, step- father, Shirley Booen; brother, Larry Loken; and brother-in-law, Dudley Petersen.
