Biography--
Robert Ervin Trettin, age 70, of Waterloo, Iowa, was received by our Lord and Savior on October 1, 2017. He died at home after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
He grew up on his family farm in Grafton Iowa. He was the middle child of Kermit and Olive (Wheeler) Trettin. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School and NIACC in Mason City.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Dalluge, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton in 1969. He was incredibly proud of the three children they raised: Amy, Michael and Matthew.
He began his career as a police officer in Waterloo before turning to computer and information technology, retiring from John Deere in 2015. His love for singing was evident by his charter membership in the Proud Image Barbershop Chorus for nearly 40 years, as well as quartets, Doo Wops and the church choir.
From a young age he loved electronics and continued that love through his hobby of being a ham radio operator. He loved deer hunting, especially with family and friends back in Grafton. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on numerous committees, deacon, usher as well as sound system operator.
Even during the last two years while battling cancer he continued to enjoy life. In between treatments Bob and Mary traveled the country visiting family and friends. He was incredibly engaged with his children and grandchildren visiting Des Moines and Santa Rosa to cheer at games and performances.
Bob had a big heart and a gentle smile. He was welcoming to everyone and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter Amy (Brian Gillespie) Morris and her son Cameron of Santa Rosa, CA; his son Michael (Maren) Trettin of West Des Moines and their children Ethan and Audrey; son Matthew (Angela Dethlefs-Trettin) Trettin of Des Moines and their children Henry and Ainsley; his sister, Mardell (Gary) Porter of Palm Harbor, FL; his brother Tom (Jean) Trettin of Herndan, VA; and his brother-in-law Larry (Carol) Dalluge of Grafton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Timothy.
