MANLY — Wallace Hubert Dahl, 93, of Manly, died Friday (Feb. 10, 2017) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, surrounded by family.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut Street, Manly, with Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery following the service.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly.
Wally was born on June 19, 1923, on the Danville Township family farm in Worth County, Iowa. He was the son of George and Bessie (Knowles) Dahl. He attended country school and graduated from Kensett High School in 1941. He was baptized at home in 1924 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith while stationed in the European Theater.
On March 5, 1944, Wally was united in marriage to Doris Nystuen at Sliver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in November 1944. He received his basic training at Camp Walters in Mineral Wells, Texas, as an infantryman and was assigned to a battalion stressing rifle training. In May 1945, he was sent to the European Theater Signal Corps, promoted to T5 Corporal in Metz, France, and was honorably discharged in August, 1946.
After returning home, he began farming and did so until retiring and moving to Manly in 1989. In 2014, Wally and Doris moved to Northwood Pine Assisted Living.
Wally was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, having helped build the church and participating in the Bethlehem Men’s group. He was a charter member and a past president of the Worth County Isaak Walton League and a life member of the VFW Post 733 in Mason City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and motor home camping, including a memorable vacation to Alaska, and many trips to visit friends in Northern Minnesota. When he was not in his boat on a lake he loved to dance, play cards and work with wood. Wally’s greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Linda Kisner (1986), parents, brothers Maurice and Phillip, and sisters-in-law Edna and Floy.
Wally will be greatly missed by his wife of 72 years, daughter LeAnne (Randee) Trebil, Manly; grandchildren Jason Kisner, Wendy (Kit) Alcorn, Kendra Ingles, and Kara (fiancé Clifton Smith) Trebil; great-grandchildren Colton Kisner, Casey Kisner, Jared Bottjen, Kylie Bottjen, and James Ingles; as well as other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Linda and the Northwood Pines and Lutheran Retirement Home caregivers for their loving kindness and support. It was a great comfort knowing he was so well cared for.
