Mary Lou Stumo, 75, Northwood, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service for Mary was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer Ave, Kensett, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mary Lou Stumo was born on Sept. 30, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William T. and Gladys L. (Lund) Holmlund. Mary was baptized on May 10, 1942, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on June 9, 1957, at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills. Mary graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1960, and attended teachers college in Cedar Falls.

She was united in marriage to Charles Joseph Stumo on June 21, 1964, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, and to this marriage three children were born, Michael, Teresa, and Julie.

Mary taught third grade at Northwood-Kensett Community Schools from 1964 until 1970, took time to raise her children and substitute teach, then returned to Northwood-Kensett as a reading teacher from 1990 until 2008. Mary was an active member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and belonging to the church choir, circle and ladies aid.

Mary enjoyed quilting at home and at the church, cooking, baking, working outside, having friends over, always welcoming people and loved her family. Mary loved being a wife, mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Charles Stumo of Northwood; three children, Michael (Nadia) Stumo of Sheffield, MA, Teresa Stumo of Titonka, and Julie Stumo of Fairfield; her grandchildren, Adnaan, Samya, and Torleif Stumo; her siblings, Bob (Sandy) Holmlund of Cedar Falls, Ron Holmlund and special friend, Connie Valentine of Dade City, FL, and Dave (Pat) Holmlund of Aurora, CO; sisters and brothers-in-law, Brice Pierce of Thompson, Helen (Roger) Olness of Rapid City, SD, and David (Clarice) Stumo of Paynesville, MN; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William and Gladys Holmlund; grandson, Nels Stumo; a sister, Shirley Pierce; sisters-in-law, Gerrie Holmlund, and Ilyce Stumo and a brother-in-law, Gene Stumo.
