Obituary for Shirley Ann Bratrud

Shirley Ann Bratrud, 77, Kensett, died Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service for Shirley will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with Reverend Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Shirley Ann Bratrud was born on March 3, 1939, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick and Dena (Wiebrandt) Neumann. Shirley was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood. She attended school in Northwood, graduating from Northwood High School in 1957.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Bratrud on June 2, 1957, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood, and to this marriage four children were born, Daniel, Debra, Lisa, and Sandra.
Shirley worked for Deluxe Filters in Lake Mills, was a care giver for AMICARE, and caring for other family members and friends. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Shirley enjoyed collecting recipes, fishing with her family in earlier years, flowers, traveling, baking, and going to their second home on Vashon Island in Washington, but most of all her most precious time was that which she spent with her family.

She was a faithful member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church and church circle. Was a former president of the Ladies Aide and of the TOPS Club in Northwood for many years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Marvin Bratrud of Kensett; four children, Daniel (Geraldine “Gerri”) Bratrud of Kensett, Debra (Tom) Flatness of Glenville, Minnesota, Lisa (Michael) Miller of Mason City, and Sandra (Rustin) Pals of Clear Lake; her grandchildren, Judd Bratrud, Tom (Megan) Flatness, Jr, Nicholas (Chelsie) Flatness, Joshua (Amber) Flatness, Jennifer (Brandon) Flatness, Austin Miller, Dylan Miller, Brayden Miller, Rylee Pals, and Hayden Pals; her great-grandchildren, Carter Radig, Aspen Flatness, Akaylah Flatness, Brextyn Flatness, Xennyn Flatness, Sloane Flatness, Weston Sorenson, and Eagan Sorenson; her sister, Arlene (Kenneth) Flatness of Albert Lea, Minnesota; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Stephen Bratrud, and eight brothers and sisters.
