Hedwig Alvina "Hattie" Bork, 94, of Grafton, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, where she was a resident for five and one half years.

Funeral services were held on Thursday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment was in the Grafton Cemetery.

Hedwig Alvina Beyer was born April 13, 1906, in Mitchell County, one of 12 children born to Albert J. and Martha (Lempke) Beyer. She was baptized and confirmed in the German language on April 9, 1922, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mitchell County. She received her education in the rural schools, then worked hard with her brother and sisters to help support the large family.

She was united in marriage to Edwin A. Bork at St. John's Lutheran Church on July 7, 1923, and lived at Carpenter, where he was a railroad section foreman for 45 years. To this union two daughters were born.

For 36 years, their home on the west edge of Carpenter was surrounded by a sea of beautiful annuals and perennials that Hattie loved and tended, along with a huge garden. She would can 400 quarts of produce annually. She was an artist in the kitchen and at Christmas time, baking hundreds and hundreds of cookies given away to family.

When Edwin died in 1964, she bought a home in Grafton and lived there for 30 years, until moving to the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center in December of 1994.

She was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Grafton and continued until her sight began to fail in the late 1980's.

Surviving are her two daughters, Janet (John) Latshaw, of Altoona and Joyce (Daryl) McCready, of Kensett; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, five sisters and one great-grandchild.
