Obituary for Shannon Karen Westrum

Shannon Karen Westrum, 36, of Joice, Iowa passed away Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Muse-Norris Inpatient Unit, Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, after a brave battle with colon cancer.

A celebration of Shannon's life will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 East South Street, Manly, Iowa with Reverend Don Preston officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, February 12, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street, Manly, Iowa. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks that donations be directed to the Shannon Westrum Memorial Fund.

Shannon Karen Torgeson was born on August 15, 1979 to Mark and Jean (Woodiwiss) Torgeson in Mason City, Iowa. Shannon attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1997. She then continued her education and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College with an Associate's Degree. Shannon worked for the Mason City Clinic in the Medical Records Department and at Principal Financial Group.

In March of 2005 Shannon met her soul mate, Neil Westrum, the two were married on September 2, 2006. Shannon enjoyed planning parties, cooking, quilting, playing card games, board games, and dominos. She loved to visit Duluth, Minnesota and her dogs always held a special place in her heart. Shannon was truly a brave woman who showed strength and courage at all times. Her family meant the world to her and she was always watching out for them.

Shannon is survived by her husband, Neil Westrum, Joice; her parents, Mark and Jean Torgeson, Manly; her siblings, Stephanie (George) Massawe, Mason City, Sarah (Jonathan) Heinz, Mason City, and Abra (Lance) Christians, Farmington, Minnesota; her grandmothers, Pearl Woodiwiss, Manly, and Beverly Torgeson, Plymouth; her father and mother-in-law Kevin and Marilyn Westrum, Boone; brother-in-law, Jeff (Jaimie) Westrum, Boone; nieces and nephews, Austin Massawe, Sydney and Mila Heinz, Zackary and Gavin Christians, and Calvin Westrum; aunts and uncles Ann (Gary) Dean, Ruth (Roger) Wendland, Karen (Jim) Dohrmann, and Dennis (Pat) Torgeson, her dog Lily; as well as many, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Arnold Woodiwiss, paternal grandfather, Richard Torgeson, aunts Karen Torgeson, Susan Trytten, Jan Berge, and uncle Dean Woodiwiss.
