September 28, 1928 - January 2, 2015

Alfred T. Mandt, 86, of Urbandale, passed away of natural causes on January 2, 2015. Al was born on September 28th, 1928, in Northwood, Iowa, to Oliver and Mabel Mandt. He attended Northwood public schools and graduated in 1947. After graduating, he served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He married Dolores Fredrickson on July 21st, 1951, and they had two children, Kris, born in 1957, and Sonja, in 1960.

Al worked for the Bell System in Waterloo while living in Cedar Falls, and was then transferred to Des Moines in 1974, where he completed his forty years with the company. While living in Cedar Falls, he enjoyed being a referee for the local high school football games.

His pastimes were woodworking in a very complete shop at his home, and he was an accomplished golfer and course marshal at Beaver Creek Golf Course. He also was a member of Oakmoor Health Center and had many friends there. One of the highlights of his last year was participating in the Korean War Honor Fight to Washington D.C.

Al was a member of VFW Post #9668 in Urbandale, and Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, Windsor Heights, Iowa.

Al was well known his Urbandale neighborhood, and enjoyed many friendships with his neighbors. The family would like to acknowledge all the companionship and assistance he enjoyed over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dolores, his daughter Sonja her husband Tom Herbert, his grandson Michael Mandt, and his honorary grandchildren Colin, Travis, Chelsea and Cory Rail, the Gary & Diane Bridgewater family, Bob and Carol Crane, two daughters-in-law, Nancy Pratt & Cindy Rail and other numerous nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Kris, his sister Donna May Flatness, and in-laws John and Martha.

A visitation, with the family in attendance, will occur at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 10th 2015 at 1:00 pm, with a memorial service starting at 2:00 pm. Reception at the church follows, at 1240 66th Street, Windsor Heights, Iowa, 50324. http://www.whlc.org . Interment will occur at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA, at a later date.
