JOICE, IOWA - Donald James Borey, 78, of Joice died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Inurnment will be at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice. Visitation will be from 2:30 until 4 p.m. at the church on Saturday.

Donald James Borey was born on September 17, 1936, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Alice (Carlson) Ortenstone. He graduated from Minnetonka High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, and earned both his Master's and Specialist’s degrees from Mankato State University.

On July 19, 1958, Don was united in marriage with Jeannine Benson in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. To this union, four children were born. In their earlier years, the family made their home in the Twin Cities where Mr. Borey taught third and fourth grades in Mound, Minnesota.

In 1972, the Borey's made the move to Lake Mills and later to Joice where Don was the elementary and middle school principal at Lake Mills Community School. Mr. Borey continued in this position until he retired in 1998, working with many teachers and students through his years at LMCS.

Don knew what was important in life, and did his best to reflect faith, family, and community on a daily basis. At Bethany Lutheran, Don served in various positions including president of the church council and was very active in music ministry.

He enjoyed playing cards, camping and vacationing with his wife and children. Donald was also the Mayor of Joice for several terms, he participated in community theatre, and sang with different music groups in the Lake Mills area. He could also be found playing tennis or tackling ongoing remodeling jobs at the family’s turn-of-the century old home.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Borey of Joice; children, Carol (Jeff Farmer) Borey of Bellevue, Nebraska, Christopher (Jody) Borey of Des Moines, Craig (Kirsten) Borey of Redwing, Minnesota, Charles (Janice) Borey of Grant City, Missouri, and Jon "Uc" (Tu) Lee of Oregon, Ohio; grandchildren, Alyse (Anthony Aiken) DeVries, Dilan DeVries, Jared Harding, Jana Harding, Jessica Borey, Temperance Borey, Thea Borey, and Isla Borey; and a great-grandson, Charlie Donald DeVries. Don is also survived by a brother, Richard Borey of San Antonio, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Alice; step-father Roger Borey; and brother Ronald Ortenstone.

If desired, for memorial contributions the family has designated Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood, or Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice.
