Byford Dean Rogness 84, of Emmons, MN, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, IA, surrounded by his family.

A funeral service was held 10:30 AM Friday, May 23, 2014, at Sliver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood, Iowa, 50459, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating.

Burial was at Sliver Lake Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Byford Dean Rogness was born July 12, 1929, to Alfred and Jenette (Bye) Rognes in Scarville, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church. He attended Larson country elementary school and Joice High School. Byford farmed in the Joice, IA, Thompson, IA, Oakland, MN areas, and then settled on their farm near Emmons, MN. Byford was born on a farm, grew up farming, and farmed the rest of his life. In the off season, he enjoyed wood working and carpentry with Gene Moen.

Byford was united in marriage to D. Colleen McCoy on November 21, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, IA, by Dr. Alvin Rogness. They were married 65 years and had four sons.

Byford and Colleen enjoyed traveling to Texas for over twenty years. They also made several trips to Florida, Hawaii, New York and Washington D.C. Byford enjoyed playing golf, playing cards and traveling in his spare time. He wanted to be finished with his planting every year in time for the fishing opener in Longville, MN, with his brother-in-law, Paul, and many friends. He also looked forward to spending time with his family and friends at their lake home on Cedar Lake.

He is survived by his loving wife Colleen of Emmons, MN; his sons, Doug (Kathy) Rogness of Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff (Lucy) Rogness of Minnetonka, MN, and Brian (Jamie) Rogness of Emmons, MN; grandchildren, Annie (John Paul) VanArsdale of Scarsdale, NY, Jill (Craig) Smith of Brooklyn, NY, Cassie (Mike) Bohmbach of Hopkins, MN, Carter Rogness and Cooper Rogness both of Emmons, MN; great-grandchildren, Stella Rose and Maxwell VanArsdale of Scarsdale, NY, and Stella Grayce Bohmbach of Hopkins, MN; brothers Oswald (Muriel) Rognes of Lake Mills, IA, Ray (Loretta) Rognes of Tampa, FL; sisters Junice Bang of Oveida, FL, Rosella Purcell of Amhurst, OH, and Norma (George) Barville of Batavia, IL; and a sisters-in-law, Mavis Rognes of Lake Mills, IA; Maxine Tantow of Mason City, IA; Wilma (Chet) Amundson of Clear Lake, IA; and brother-in-law John Moore of Mason City, IA.

Byford was preceded in death by his parents, his son Tom, and brothers Jerome and Al, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Donald Bang, Dale Purcell, Paul Tantow, Ralph McCoy, Helen (Dewey) Conley, and Merrill McCoy.
