Obituary for Mrs. Marlene Adell Hargis

Marlene Adell Hargis, 79, Manly, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Marlene will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut Street, Manly, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service time on Monday at the church.

Those wishing to give a memorial in Marlene’s memory may want to consider contributions to Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, or to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly.

Marlene Adell Hargis was born March 2, 1935, in Almena, Wisconsin, the daughter of Arthur and Agnes (Soltau) Simon. Marlene was baptized on April 3, 1935, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation May 16, 1948, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Marlene received her education in the Albert Lea, Minnesota, schools, graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1952. She was united in marriage to Roger Hargis January 10, 1953, in Albert Lea, and to this marriage six children were born, Katherine, Karen, Korrine, Keith, Kim, and Konni. Marlene worked in the her fathers business, Simon’s Horse Market in Albert Lea, Oltman’s Grocery store in Manly, and Unisys Corporation in Clear Lake.

Marlene enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, baking, and sewing, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren, and spending time with them especially at their cabin in Nevis, Minnesota.

Marlene was a very active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, being on the alter guild at the church, Trainmen’s Auxiliary, and Athletic Booster Club all in Manly. Marlene was also the 4-H Queen in Hayward Township, Minnesota.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Katherine (Marvin) Banken of Mason City, Karen (Eric) Shurtz of Mason City, Korrine (Lynn) Nelson of Manly, Keith (Stephanie) Hargis of Clear Lake, Kim (Cory) Hicken of Grafton, and Konni Johnson significant other, (Chad Wolfe) of Mason City; grandchildren, Randy (Carrie) Banken, Kassandra (Matthew) Barnes, Brock Banken, Brent (Magen) Bagley, Logan (Steve) Shurtz, Karl Nelson (fiancé Melissa Abbott), Kevin Nelson (Danielle McMurphy), Kaleb Nelson, Emma Hicken, Kaelee Hicken, Cody Johnson, Courtney Johnson, and Crisstian Jacobs; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Morgan, Hayden, Chance, and Charlie Banken, Samuel Barnes, Ella Bagley, Kamryn and Kolyn Nelson and Maddie McMurphy; brother, Ted (Cynthia) Simon of Holly, CO; sister-in-law, Avis Simon of Eagen, Minnesota; a long time friend of 55 years, Virginia (Don) Robert of Mason City; many nieces, nephews; and many extended family members and friends.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Tom Simon, and husband Roger Hargis.
