John Emil Glassel died at Mercy hospital in Mason City September 6, 1939 as the result of a hemorrhage following an operation. He was 63 years and three months of age. Funeral rites were conducted at the Grafton Lutheran church by Rev. H.O. Lechner. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

John Emil Glassel was born June 6, 1876 on a farm three miles south of Grafton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Grafton Lutheran church. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Glassel. He was united in marriage to Miss Addie Bartz on November 20, 1898, in Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa, and they setled on a farm four miles southeast of Grafton. To this union three children were born; Mrs. Albert Borchardt of Rock Falls, and Louis and Lawrence of Plymouth.

In 1912, Mr. Glassel sold the farm on which they resided and purchased a farm near Plymouth on which he resided at the time of his death.

Mr. Glassel was a trustee of the Grafton Lutheran church for seven years.

Up to about five weeks ago he had enjoyed good health. He was taken to Mercy hospital at Mason City for medical care for about four days and returned home for a period of two weeks, and going back to the hospital where he submitted to two operations, one on August 28 and another on September 2.

Surviving are his wife, the three children; three brothers, Ferdinand of Wichita, Kansas, William of Deer Creek, Minn., and Henry of Otranto; one sister, Bertha of Rochester, and ten grandchildren. Two half-sisters and one sister preceded him in death.
