Funeral services were held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Mr. Kermit Singelstad officiating. Burial took place in Sion Lutheran Cemetery.
Murlette Serena (Lovick) Hagen was born March 1, 1915 in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa to parents Henry and Ida (Hanson) Lovick. She was the oldest of twelve children so she quickly became her mother’s helper. She said she became the “chores” helper while Amy, the next child, was the one who helped more with the younger children. She attended Rusley country school and worked in the homes of many neighboring farm family households.
She was united in marriage with Gilman Richard Hagen at Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, Iowa. They made their home near Kensett and later moved to their home farm in rural Lake Mills. Murlette was known for her delicious food and immaculate house, as well as working side by side with Gilman with the farm chores. After Gilman’s death, she worked at the Lake Mills Care Center in housekeeping for nearly 20 years. A position she excelled at and thoroughly enjoyed.
Upon her marriage, she became a member of Sion Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member until her death. Throughout the years she was an active member of WELCA and circle. She also saw to it that her three children became active in the church. Her life was lived in kindness and service to others.
As her health declined she was cared for at home by her daughter Linda until in 2009 it became necessary for her to become a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center.
