Raymond E. Groe, age 88, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 2 PM on Monday, January 29, 2007, at Sion Lutheran Church, 4527 Finch Avenue, rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial took place in the Sion Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Raymond Edward Groe was born January 29, 1918, the son of Gilman and Cora (Troe) Groe. He was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, and attended Silver Lake Country School. Raymond was united in marriage with Evelyn Kallheim on December 21, 1940. The family made their home in the country in Bristol Township, where Raymond was a dairy farmer, and the couple raised five children. After retirement, Raymond and Evelyn moved into Lake Mills in 1993. Raymond was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, and a very proud grandpa and great grandpa. He enjoyed mowing lawns, coffee at the Grand Café, bowling, golfing, playing cards, reading “old western” books and helping Gordy Hagen do field work. Ray served as a dedicated custodian and bell ringer at Sion Church for 50 years. While the children were home, they would help with cleaning the church and taking care of the church grounds.

Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Evelyn of Lake Mills, IA; five children; Victor and his wife Georgia Groe of Lester Prairie, MN; Julie Groe of Ft. Myers, FL; Russell and his wife Judy Groe of Murfreesboro, TN; Robert Groe and his friend Marsha of Albert Lea, MN; Harlen Groe of Ames, IA; grandchildren; Kirt and Stacey Groe, Annette and Jonn Machemehl, Christina and Joe Kadolph, Jason and Holly Groe, Kara and Dale Hudson, Scott Groe, Sean and Mandy Groe, Tammy Groe, Troy Groe; great-grandchildren; Allison Machemehl, Morgan Machemehl, Jessie Kadolph, Jami Kadolph, Mikaela Kadolph, Christian Kadolph, Reid VanHove, Ian Groe, Chloe Groe, and Jadyn Groe; brothers, Noreen and his wife Gladys Groe of Lake Mills, IA; Dennis Groe of FL; sisters, Carol Willand of Joice, IA; Shirley and her husband Dale Holstad of Clear Lake, IA; Marge and her husband Roy Myhr of Ocala, FL; Jean and her husband Sam Wilson of Bricelyn, MN; and Irene McDowell of Des Moines, IA; sisters-in-law, Lovenea Groe and Helen Groe, both of Lake Mills, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his baby brother, Gene; his parents; three other brothers, Gaylord, Orlen and Lester; sister-in law, Norma; and brother-in-law, Stanley Willand.
