Joy Carleton Hendrikson
Joy Carleton Hendrikson, Jr., 85, of rural Northwood, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2013, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville, Iowa.
Joy was born June 7, 1928, the only child, to Joy and Kittie (Kjersti Sola) Hendrikson, Sr., in Austin, Minnesota. Joy was baptized on June 24, 1928, at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church. He was confirmed there on Sept. 13, 1942. He spent his life living in Deer Creek Township attending 8 years of school in Otranto, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Lyle, Minnesota, in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1955 where he attended Army Lab School and served in Tokyo, Japan with the United Nations blood bank. After returning from Japan, he started farming and was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Unit in Mankato, Minn. He received his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army Reserve after eight years of service.
On July 3, 1956, Joy married Leila Cottrell at the First Lutheran Church, Glenville, Minna. Joy farmed his entire life and especially enjoyed feeding cattle. He was employed at Fieldstone in Northwood for a few years where he truly enjoyed his coworkers. He also was the Worth County Weed Commissioner and did some crop insurance adjusting.
He was a board member of the London State Bank, London, Minnesota, for 21 years.
He was also on the Oakland Farmer’s Elevator board for many years. He has been a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle for more than 45 years serving in many capacities including President for six years. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. His greatest joy was spending time with all six grandchildren and attending their many sports and music activities.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leila; daughter: Margaret (Paul) Pederson of Carpenter, Iowa; and son, James (Shelley) Hendrikson, Lyle, Minn. His grandchildren are: Nathan (Leann) Pederson, Polk City, Iowa; Kjersti (Adam) Mayer, St. Ansgar, Iowa; and Sam Pederson, Carpenter, Iowa; Martha Hendrikson, Grafton, Iowa; Dallas Hendrikson, Somerset, New Jersey; and Maaike Hendrikson, Somerset, New Jersey. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Kellan Mayer; one sister-in-law, Inez Cottrell; and three nephews: Jack, Mike, and Pat Cottrell. He is also survived by numerous Hendrikson and Sola cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and brother-in-law, Earl Cottrell.
Funeral services for Joy will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Lyle with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will take place in the London-Deer Creek Cemetery rural Northwood, Iowa. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion of Lyle.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, September 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Hwy. 65 South, Northwood, Iowa. The family will also greet friends and family one hour prior to the service at the church.
