JOICE - Richard D. Slattum, 73, of Joice, died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2001) at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will take place at Concordia Cemetery, rural Joice.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.
Richard Dale Slattum died on Nov. 27, 2001, at his home in rural Joice, where he was born on March 28, 1928, the son of Clarence G. and Lillie (Wogen) Slattum.
He attended Clark School in Bristol Township until eighth grade and graduated from Joice High School in 1945.
He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy. Richard was united in marriage to Janell Tweed on Dec. 19, 1948, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice.
After attending Iowa State University, he returned to the Slattum farm near Joice. He farmed for many years, and then worked at Farmers Savings Bank in Joice.
Richard was an active member of Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice, where he was baptized and confirmed. Later, he was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. He served as vice president of the Iowa Farmers Union and was also a member of the American Legion, first in Joice and later Otto Chose Post No. 235 in Lake Mills.
Richard enjoyed spending time at Pelican Lake in northern Minnesota with family and friends. He also enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, particularly the Iowa State Cyclones.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Amy and her husband, Jim Twetten, of Ames, and Ada and her husband, Mike Larson, of Red Wing, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mindy and Tanner Twetten of Ames and Josh, Tony and Travis Larson of Red Wing. He is also survived by two brothers, Cecil Slattum and his wife, Barbara, and Darrel Slattum and his wife, Mary; three sisters, Verna and her husband, Floyd Skellenger, Shirley and her husband, Kenneth Chodur, and Norma and her husband, Jerry Alvey; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillie Slattum; his wife, Janell; and a son, Jeffrey.
