MANLY, IOWA - Shirley Ann Carlson, 70, of Manly died Monday (Dec. 21, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A graveside service for Shirley will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, at the Manly Cemetery with the Rev. David Kucera of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly officiating. The family of Shirley's has requested that memorial contributions be made in Shirley's memory, C/O Keith Carlson at 113 East North St., Manly, IA 50456.

Shirley Ann Carlson was born on May 8, 1939, in Emmetsburg, the daughter of Raymond and Margaret (Kress) Brown. She attended grade school in Emmetsburg and Kensett High School. Shirley began her career teaching ceramics for the mentally and physically challenged children at the Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, retiring after 30 years.

After her retirement, Shirley did volunteer work at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center and as a Bus Aide in Manly. She was united in marriage to Keith Carlson on Sept. 29, 1962, in Mason City. Shirley was an advocate for people with a disability, and in 1985 she was awarded volunteer of the year by than Gov. Terry Branstad. Shirley enjoyed cross-stitching, reading and crossword puzzles, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her husband, Keith, and all her family. Shirley was a 35-year member of the Women of the Moose in Mason City.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Keith Carlson of Manly; her children, Marty Carlson of Jefferson, Ricky Carlson of Mason City, Corinne Schoolcraft of Centerville, and Jolene Carlson of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Keela Clausen of Washington, D.C., Nathan Carlson of Nora Springs, Alicia Schoolcraft of Mystic, Tiffany Carlson of Mason City, Justin Schoolcraft of Centerville, Dustin Willis, Stephanie Hardiman and Nicholas Carlson, all of Mason City, Michael Carlson of Jefferson; two great-granddaughters, Mya Burgess of Mason City and Makynna Carlson of Nora Springs; her best friend, Belva Vician, of Mason City; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Her parents, Raymond and Margaret Brown; and a twin daughter, Colleen Carlson, preceded Shirley in death.
