NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Dorothy Mae Coonrod, 82, of Northwood, died Sunday (July 5, 2009) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Daniel Hart officiating. Burial will be in Rock Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood.

Dorothy Mae Coonrod was born March 13, 1927, to Paul and Leona (Stickfort) Dobel in Mason City. She graduated in 1944 from Manly High School. She married Donald Barta and to them two daughters, Doreen and Donna, were born. They later divorced.

On November 14, 1972, Dorothy married George Coonrod in Chamberlain, S.D., and spent their married life on a farm west of Northwood.

She loved being a farmer's wife, working with horses and was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables. Later she enjoyed craft sales with her jams and jellies, denim rugs, cookies and bread. Dorothy especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She entered Good Shepherd in December of 2006.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in January 1997 and brother, Donald Dobel.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Doreen (Alan) Ferden, of Waterloo, and Donna (Robert) Graham, of Central City, Neb.; stepsons, Gerald (Linda) Coonrod of Northwood and Gary (Kathy) Coonrod of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Justin (Jamey) Brown, Jana (Michael) Lindaman, Kari (Mike) Mentink, Jess (Stephanie) Coonrod, Kris (Ed) Linder, Adie Mae (Andrew) Kramer, Jillian (Peter) Lemons, Zeb (Shauna) Graham and Isaiah Graham; niece, Karen (Larry) Day of Mason City; nephew, Jim Dobel of Manly; and special friends Scott and Brenda Moretz of Northwood.
