FERTILE, IOWA - Carl C. Larsen, 83, of Fertile, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with the Rev. Marlin Snyder and the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in North Prairie Cemetery near Scarville.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and an hour prior to services at the church.

Carl Christian Larsen was born on Dec. 24, 1919, to Lauritz and Annie (Olson) Larsen, in Felton, Minn. He grew up and received his education in Felton. He attended Waldorf College in Forest City and played in the college band.

On June 29, 1941, he was united in marriage with Alice Solomonson at North Prairie Lutheran Church.

Carl served with the 27th Photo Squadron during World War II and saw overseas duty in the British Isles. Carl played in a band called the "Lightnings," entertaining troops throughout England and France.

Following his honorable discharge, he spent seven years in Forest City working for Olson Furniture.

In 1953, the couple moved to Fertile where they made their home and Carl was part owner of a local hardware store. Carl and Alice founded Larsen Plumbing and Heating in 1958 where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He continued to work part time until 1995.

Carl was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church where he served on various committees and was chairperson for many years. He also served on the board of directors of Community State Bank in Clear Lake, was a member of the Clear Lake VFW and a charter member of Fertile Lions Club. Carl served many years with the Fertile and Forest City Community School districts.

In his spare time, Carl enjoyed camping, fishing and building model airplanes with his grandsons.

Carl passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills where he had lived for two and a half years, suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Carl is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice; a daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Dennis Faber, of Fertile; three grandsons, Tim Faber and his wife, Brooke, of Fort Meyers, Fla., Tom Faber of Rochester, Minn., and Edward Faber of Fertile; two sisters, Josephine Larsen and Lorraine Diederichs of Minneapolis; three brothers, John (Betty) Larsen of Fargo, N.D., Harold Larsen of Moorehead, Minn., and Kenneth (Lois) Larsen, of Sarasota, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Bob Chesley of Brunswick, Maine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Carl will be sadly missed by friends and family.
