Michael Arnold Lien, 63, a Northwood native, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2008) at St. Mary's Hospital, Reno, Nev. from complications of emphysema.

Funeral services were held Aug. 28, 2008, at the Lemon Valley Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Reno with the Rev. Kevin Moore officiating. Burial was in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev.

Michael was born Sept. 19, 1944, to Arnold and Elsie Marie (Hagen) Lien. Born and raised in Northwood, Michael attended Northwood-Kensett grade and high Schools, graduating in 1962. He enjoyed playing basketball and football and earned several all-conference honors.

Mike attended Mason City Junior College, then entered the Navy and served proudly for six years.

Mike married Sarah Afflitto in Bath, Maine, on Aug. 29, 1969. To this union, two children were born, Michael and Katrina Marie.

Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed his video camera, golf, traveling and football. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends and being active in his church.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sarah, of Sparks, Nev.; son, Michael, and his children, Joseph, Taylor, Alexa and Jacob; daughter, Katrina Marie Green, and her children, Kayla and Kimberly Herrick and Tyler and Breanna Green, all of Reno, Nev.; a son, David, from a previous marriage; a sister, Carol, and her husband, Ken McMiller, of Eau Claire, Wis., a number of cousins, and a host of friends throughout several states and many in the North Iowa area.
