Retired Army Col. Clarence Harvey Gunderson, 71, who served as a chemical officer in France during World War II, died of cancer Tuesday at Walter Reed Hospital.

Col. Gunderson was born in Northwood, Iowa. A 1930 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point, he earned a master's degree in chemical engineering at the Masschusetts Institute of Technology.

He served here during the 1950s, and was a chemical officer attached to the 2d Army at Fort Meade, Md., when he retired in 1958. He moved to Indian Lake Estates, Fla., that year.

He is survived by a son, Army Col. Raymond E., of Fairfax; a daughter, Dr. Belmar S., of Pleasant Hope, Mo., and two grandchildren.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
