Most of my relatives (those buried in Spring Lake Cemetery in Bremer County Iowa were farmers in the area. Across the road from Spring Lake Cemetery used to be the Cave family farm. I can trace my ancestry to Samuel Halstead Cave but that is as far as that line can be traced (by me). The Sturdevants were from upstate New York and had members of that family served in the revolutionary war.
I know nothing of the Ferneys. The Gullifords married into the Cave family early on and I think are related to the Sturdevants, being from the same region of New York. Samuel Cave was married to Emeline (Sturdevant) Cave in New York, many of their children were born in New York before the moved to Iowa. Emeline Sturdevant Cave's Father Ira Hanier Sturdevant served in the war of 1812 and was born in Tinmouth, Vermont.His father Caleb Sturdevant served in the Revolutionary War.
