Sheeley family in Woodbury County

SHEELEY, REEVES

I am in a bit of a dilemma here, and I was hoping someone might be able to help me sort things out.

I have Thomas F. Sheeley marrying Minnie Reeves in LeMars, Plymouth, IA on Oct 15, 1877. They appear in the 1880 Federal Census in Plymouth Co., and in the 1885 IA census in Osceola Co. with two children, Lotta (Charlotte) and Royal.

The next time Minnie appears, is in Woodbury Co. in 1885 and she is now married to Matthew A (or H) Sheeley. From here on out until 1930, he appears in some variation of this name - Matthew A/H or MH, etc. Additional children are listed - Edith, Ray M., Kenneth, Irma/Erma.

Based on information from the 1925 IA Census and the marriage and death information posted on this site for Charlotte May Sheeley and Ray Matthew Sheeley, I know that the father is named Thomas F Sheeley ... so why does his name change? And, to top things off, the marriage date of Matthew and Minnie is about 15 years of of when she married Thomas.

In the 1910 Federal Census, I found that it said Matthew was on his second marriage and Minnie on her first; I found a Thomas F Sheeley in Sioux Falls, SD, who was also on a second marriage to a Julia Knutson.

Here is my dilemma: Either Thomas F Sheeley decided to change his name sometime between 1885 and 1895, and the census takers messed up ages and marriage years (which they have been known to do!), OR Thomas F and Minnie Sheeley divorced and she married a brother of his (based on the IA 1925 census, Matthew has the right parents for my line I'm tracing, though I've never had a child with that name associated with them before 1895) and Thomas F. moved to Sioux Falls, SD.

Does anyone have any information that might possibly help me to unravel this mystery? I've been working on it on and off for over 2 years now!

Thanks so much ... Marianne Spencer, Indianapolis, IN
