Smithland, Iowa—Calvin L. Servis, 83, of Smithland, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at his resident of cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the church with a prayer service and Masonic service at 7 p.m. Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Servis was born November 30, 1916 in Correctionville, Iowa, the son of Elza and Lulu (Fixsel) Servis. He attended school in the rural Anthon, Iowa area. He married Mary Ellen Gilman June 21, 1938, at Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They moved to Smithland in 1939 where he was a Standard Oil agent until his retirement in 1972. He served in the US Army during World War II.

He was a member of Smithland United Methodist Church where he held various positions on the official board, a 50-year member of the Leslie Seaton American Legion Post 666 at Smithland and the Quarry Lodge 404 A.F. & A.M. at Mapleton; past Worthy Patron of Evergreen Chapter Order of Eastern Star; a 59-year member of the Sioux City Consistory; and a longtime member of the Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City. He served many years on the Smithland School board, the Smithland Town Council and the fire department. He enjoyed woodworking and provided community service.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Richard and Renae of Omaha and Gary and Merydith of Milwaukee, Wis.; three grandchildren, Scott, Monica and Carrie; five great grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Gene and Shirley Rupp of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Wayne Hart of Ft. Myers, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard and two sisters, Maxine Sands and Shirley Clark.
