Jean A. Dacres, 94, of Sioux City died Tuesday, December 3, 2024, peacefully in his sleep. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Brad Pelzel as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, December 8th, with family present and a Vigil Service at 5:00 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Avenue. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church.
Jean Anthony Dacres was born July 1, 1930, at St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington to George Dacres and Agnes Ester (Nibler) Dacres. He lived with his family on the ranch, five miles north-west of Walla Walla and was the youngest of seven siblings. He attended Bakers Public School and St. Patrick growing up. While in school he played basketball, baseball, football, ran in the 4x100 relay and was student body president in his senior year. He graduated May 1948 with a Basketball Scholarship to St. Martin's University but ending up going to Washington State University for Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and then to Gonzaga University for his Law Degree. In December 1950, he enlisted in the United State Air Force and served during the Korean War. He was discharged as a Sergeant in January 1954 in Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. While working in California he went to a party in the Hollywood Hills, where he met his wife Joan F. Ford. They got married six months later in Cherokee, Iowa on July 29th, 1961. Together they raised two daughters and two sons. He spent his professional career in the insurance industry, both in claims and as an insurance agent, spanning over 60 years. He was president of the Siouxland Claims Association in 1975. He owned a Crocker Claims franchise for over 12 years before he started his own business, Anchor D Claims, with his family. He also had a small insurance agency. He was a Lector/Communion Distributor and longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church. He spent 20 years as a Boys and Girls Youth Basketball Coach. After retirement, he spent his time traveling around the world with his wife, as well as taking his grandchildren to different states for summer vacations. He enjoyed watching sports and loved attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He also spent time as a volunteer for Hospice of Siouxland, as well as the NAIA basketball tournament, for several years. He enjoyed supporting and watching Heelan sports, as well as following his favorite sports teams, Gonzaga University, the Green Bay Packers and Boston Celtics.
He is survived by his children, Matt Dacres of Sioux City, Iowa, Jena Thiele (Ed) of Sioux City, Iowa, Deana Smyth (Bill) of Bellevue, Nebraska, Paul Dacres (Kristen) of Sioux City, Iowa, ten grandchildren; Megan Huber (Jared), Rachel Thiele (Adam Leff), Seth Thiele, Ryan Dacres (Kayla), Jake Thiele, Mikaela Smyth, Dublin Smyth, Nia Smyth, Brooke Dacres and Braedon Dacres. Three great-grandchildren Jackson Thiele, Kolsen Huber, Caleb Huber and three step great-grandchildren Kaden, Bethany, and Lucas Leff.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan, his parents George and Agnes Ester, brothers James, George, Francis David, Paul and sisters Margaret and Catherine.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, and honorary pallbearers will his granddaughters.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Siouxland and Floyd Senior Living for providing such loving care to Jean.
