17 October 2024Nita Kay (Hughes) Ashmore
It is with heavy hearts that we share news of the peaceful passing of Nita Kay (Hughes) Ashmore on October 12, 2024. Born on August 1, 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa, Nita's life was full of love, laughter, and deep compassion. She showed these qualities every day and they were as vibrant as the flowers she loved to grow. Her home was welcome to all, and she took great pride in making it comfortable for everyone.
Nita's journey was one deeply rooted in family and love. Born the youngest of nine, she understood the value of family connections from a young age. Growing up she enjoyed roller skating, spending time with friends and dancing. Nita attended Central High and met the love of her life, her late husband Roland (Rollie) Ashmore, who attended East High. The two married when Nita was just 19. From their love they created a beautiful family that included their daughters, Sandy and Cindy.
Nita and Rollie were active members of the Sioux City community, including many years with the Sertoma Club. Nita, Rollie, and their girls took annual trips to Colorado which occasionally included friends and family as well.
Nita and Rollie moved from Iowa to Colorado and eventually settled in Lincoln, Nebraska where Nita went back to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her dedication to healthcare was a testament to her nurturing spirit. Her retirement years in Lincoln were filled with family activities, outdoor explorations, and visits to craft fairs. No matter where life took her, Nita's love for her family remained her guiding star, a beacon of warmth and joy that will be remembered by all who knew her.
Nita is survived by her loving daughter, Cindy (Jeff) Blunck; eight grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Velmer Hughes; her mother, Mabel (Olson) Hughes; her beloved husband, Roland Ashmore; her eight siblings; and her daughter, Sandy Chavez.
