AKRON, Iowa - John Bouwman, 72, of Akron died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev: Allen Bidne officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. today at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Visitation will resume 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Mr. Bouwman was born March 5, 1928, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of John and Jacoba (Smit) Bouwman. He was raised in the Rock Rapids area and graduated from Lester High School in 1947. He received his two year teaching certificate from Westmar College in 1949. He received his bachelor's degree from Westmar College in 1968.

He married Eleanor Lupkes on April 6, 1951, in Rock Rapids. He taught country school for five years before moving to Little Rock, Iowa, in 1955.
He taught in Little Rock for 13 years before moving to Akron in 1968. He retired in 1990.

He attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janet Cope of Oklahoma City; three sons and their wives, Robert and Linda of Akron, Edward and Pat of Plympia, Wash., and Jeffery and Carolyn of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; four brothers, Tom of Rock Rapids, Walt of Luverne, Minn., Gradus of Brandon, S.D., and Hank of Lester, Iowa; and four sisters, Ann Boom of Rock Rapids, Marie Heyman of Alton, Iowa, Greta Hommes of Rock Rapids and Adrianna Snyder of Spencer, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward, Dick and Marion; and two sisters, Mary Jane and Jeanette.

Pallbearers will be Tommy and Harlan Bouwman, Tommy and Lloyd Lupkes, Jim Fastert and Jerry Hommes.
