To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren of Tri-Luminar Lodge, No. 18, A. F. and A. M.
Your committee to whom was referred the duty of drafting memorial resolutions relative to the life and decease of our fraternal brother, Major-General Eliott W. Rice, who was made a Mason in Tri-Luminar Lodge at its earliest history, and of which he remained a worthy, honored and well beloved brother until the 21st ult [sic]. We beg leave to report the following: Resolved, That in the death of Brother Elliott W. Rice, it is the sense of this lodge that it has lost one of its most genial, loyal, patriotic and brave members; a brother who, at the earliest period of his manhood, when danger threatened our common country, made haste to volunteer as a private soldier in the army for the union, and unaided by other influences than his valuable services, good judgment, valorous bearing, conspicuous gallantry and meritorious conduct, was in due time promoted from private to Major, from Major to Colonel, from Colonel to Brigadier-General, and from Brigadier-General (for gallant and distinguished services during the war) to Brevet-Major-General. Resolved, That as our lamented brother, a short time before his decease, requested that flowers be used in place of crape in connection with his burial, this lodge will place a memorial casket of flowers in the lodge, the same to be maintained there forty days as a tribute to his memory. Resolved, That this report shall be published in the Oskaloosa city papers and copies of same sent by the secretary of our lodge to the bereaved relatives of our deceased brother. D. W. LORING, M. L. JACKSON, WM. T. SMITH, Com.
