WINNEBAGO, Neb. - Laura Jean Whitewing, 58, of Winnebago died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Native American Church in Winnebago, with Morgan Earth officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Indian Cemetery.

Visitation will be from today until service time Sunday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Winnebago Tribal Wake and Burial Program.

Mrs. Whitewing was born Oct. 14, 1941, in Winnebago, the daughter of Solomon and Maxine (Thomas) Whitewing.

She attended Winnebago Public School and received her GED from Heelan High School in Sioux City. She also attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb., and DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix. She married Sterling Snake in 1959, in Winnebago. He died May 17, 1976. She had lived in Winnebago, City, St. Paul, Minn., Long Beach, Calif., Phoenix, Omaha, Cleveland, Wakefield, Neb., Hershey, Neb., and Rosebud Sioux Resvervation in South Dakota. She worked as a kitchen aide with Indian Health Services, as a laborer with IBP, with Center for Rural Affairs for Vinnebago, Tribe of Nebraska, Red House in St. Paul, Internal Revenue Service in Phoenix, in the Planning and Administration department with Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, as a bartender and with the Community Action in Walthill. She belonged to the Catholic faith, St. Augustine's and Dutch Reformed Church in Winnebago. She also belonged to Wo-On-Bi Club.

Survivors include her children, Lisa Whitwing and Lenore, Stuart, LaVonne, Scott and Lorna Snake, all of Winnebago; 15 grandchildren; five -grandchildren; a sister, Donna Whitewing of Winnebago; and a brother, Wayne Evans of Vermillion, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Franklin and Jeffrey Whitewing.

Pallbearers will be Charles Bumann, Carmen Saul, James Neff, Carlos Trinidad, Marc Bird and Charles Aldrich.
