SIOUX CITY - Karen E. Houpt, 80 of Sioux City passed away Nov. 7, 2023, at a local nursing home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Morningside Lutheran Church (located at 700 S. Martha St. in Sioux City) with Pastor Paul Peterson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Karen was born on December 17, 1942, in Wayne, NE. to Harold and Verona (Victor) Frese. She grew up on the family farm near Lyons, NE. Karen attended school at Lyons and graduated from Lyons High School in 1960. She went on to attend Wayne State College. Karen went to work for Home Federal as a loan processor. She married Jerry Houpt on July 25, 1965, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lyons, NE. Later she worked for Jean's Dress Shop in Sioux City and for Morningside Lutheran Church.

Karen was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, Merrium Circle, Altar Guild, choir, funeral committee. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, gardening but her favorite was making Christmas stockings.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Houpt, son, Terry Houpt and his friend Christine Wolf, of Sioux City, grandchildren Kelsie (Quinton) Behlers of Elkhorn, NE, Collin Houpt and his friend Jessica Parrish of Sioux City, great grandchildren Hadley Behlers and Leni Mae Behlers, sister, Jan (Larry) Smith, Pender, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Harold, and Verona (Victor) Frese, brother, Harlan Frese
