Eugene "Gene" Salmon

Aug. 16, 1951 - Nov. 6, 2023

Eugene "Gene" Salmon, 72 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at a local hospital due to a Brain Bleed after being on a Ventilator. Gene was born on August 16, 1951 in Boyden, Iowa to Lawrence "Larry" T. and Johanna "Jo" G. (Bosman) Salmon. Following his High School graduation, Gene served his country in the United States Navy for a total of over 20 years. He married Kathy Harbeck on August 1, 1981 in a service in rural Union County, South Dakota.

Gene worked at Oakleaf Apartments as property maintenance from March 1, 2005 until the Summer of 2020. He was a proud member of the American Legion Riders (ALR) Wasmer Post 241 in LeMars, Iowa. Gene enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, and fishing in his younger years. He enjoyed playing cards, especially "500", Pitch, and Hearts. Later in life, his brother Larry bought a motorcycle, so of course, Gene had to have one also. "Please Honey, Larry has a bike now, so I want one too and he needs someone to ride with!" And I'm glad he did, Kathy learned to love riding as much as he did. Many trips to Black Hills, several to Sturgis, South Dakota. He still enjoyed cards, watching the Hawkeyes and other Big 10 teams, the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs. Gene also loved county music, but his most important love was his family and friends.

Gene is survived by his wife Kathy (Kat) Salmon of Sioux City, Iowa; sons Tony Salmon of Sioux City and Mike Salmon of DesMoines, Iowa; son-in-law Joe Hollinger of Sioux City; grandkids Kelani Salmon of Clairmont, California, Kyson Salmon of DesMoines, Iowa, and Maisey Salmon of Sioux City, Brady Salmon, and Charles Swearengine; brothers Larry (Tracy) Salmon of Sioux City, Iowa; Tom (Trish) Salmon of Fairmont, West Virginia; sisters Mary Ellen (Pete) Attema of LeMars, Iowa; Pat (Jerry) Harms of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Glenda Salmon of Mt. Home, Arkansas; brothers-in-law Dan (Alana) Harbeck of Idaho Springs, Colorado, Brad (Kim) Harbeck of Chandler, Arizona; sister-in-law Jo Harbeck of Sioux City, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Special friend, Sallie (his 5 year-old black Lab).

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, daughter Paula Gene Hollinger, brother-in-law Dave Harbeck, father-in-law Don Harbeck, and mother-in-law Gerry Harbeck.

Gene was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in February of 2012 and took radiation and was in remission until January of 2021.
