BATTLE CREEK, Iowa - William J. "Bill" Welte, 88, Battle Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1993, at the Willowdale Care Center in Battle Creek.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Danbury, Iowa, with the Rev. John Brennan officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home, Battle Creek, continuing after 4 p.m. at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service.

Mr. Welte was born March 12, 1904, near Danbury, son of Joseph and Cornelia (Callahan) Welte. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School in Danbury. He married Jeanette Krager Feb. 26, 1935, in Holstien, Iowa. They farmed in the Danbury area for many years, then moved near Cushing, Iowa, in 1970. He continued his hog production business there until his health forced his retirement. He moved to Willowdale Care Center in April of 1979.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Roger and Barbara Welte of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Yvonne) McBride of Battle Creek and Diane Mohrhauser of Sioux City; two sisters, Eileen Hudgel of Sioux City and Ora Collins of Napa, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Lori Seward, Cathy Hammer, Jill Giesler, Tracey Schmidt, Lisa McBride-Ramler, Rob and Gina McBride, Joe Mohrhauser and Kris Smiley; seven great-grandchildren, Josh and Cody Hammer, Sam Seward, Shaina, Dylan and Shelby Schmidt and Lindsay McBride-; Ramler.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dan, Charles and Gerald Welte, and a sister, Ethel Petit.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
