22 March 1934

The pioneers of Woodbury Co. who came here and settled the country that was in the wild prairie state, breaking the sod and wresting a living from the land are passing to those other shores one by one.

In the passing of J. O. Jerman another of these pioneers has gone. He was widely known throughout the entire county.

Mr. Jerman was born at Iron Hills near Maquoketa, Iowa, in 1855. He and Mary Roark were married in 1878 and the couple started for Woodbury Co. in a covered wagon just two weeks after the nuptial vows had been exchanged. Mr. and Mrs. Jerman settled near Anthon and farmed there for 22 years. In 1900 Mr. Jerman retired and moved to Anthon where he since had made his home.

Mr. Jerman was active in public and civic affairs. He was an organizer of the Anthon State Bank and served as director and vice president of the institution for 33 years. In 1890 he was chairman of the board of county supervisors. He also held numerous township offices.

Survivors include his widow, two sons, Oliver M. and Walter L. Jerman of Anthon and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Miller and Mrs. J. J. Rourke of Anthon.

Funeral services for Mr. Jerman, 79, of Anthon who died at his home Thursday evening after a sickness of 2 weeks were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon with Rev. P. Hurley of Anthon officiating assisted by Rev. George Cook of Marcus and Rev. Ernest of Oto. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery at Anthon.
