Fr. Jerome P. Cosgrove, 85, of Sioux City passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, at Holy Cross Parish-St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Msgr. Kenneth Seifried presiding. The Homilist will be Father William Schreiber. Concelebrating will be several clergy friends of Father Cosgrove's. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, 2022 at the church with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. A link to view the livestream of Father Cosgrove's Mass will be available on his obituary page at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Fr. Cosgrove was born Sept. 30, 1937, in Sioux City, to Francis Joseph "Frank" and Mary Catherine (Knowles) Cosgrove. He attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1955. He furthered his education by graduating from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. in 1959; St. Bernard's Provincial Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa in 1963; and received his Master's degree at Creighton University in Omaha in 1963.

Fr. Cosgrove was ordained on June 1, 1963 by Bishop Joseph Mueller at The Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. He was assigned to many parishes and high schools during his ministry. They are as follows: St. Peter & Paul (Holy Spirit) & Kuemper High School in Carroll, Iowa 1963-69; St. Joseph Parish Duncombe & St. Edmund's High School in Ft. Dodge, Iowa 1969-74; St. Joseph Parish, Neptune & Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars, Iowa 1974-79; Bishop Heelan Catholic School in Sioux City 1979-81; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Carroll 1981-86; St. Michael's Parish in Sioux City 1986-93; Sacred Heart Parish in Ft. Dodge 1993-95; St. Joseph's Parish in Le Mars 1995-99; and St. Patrick's Parish in Estherville, Iowa & St. Mary's Parish in Armstrong, Iowa 1999-2007. Following retirement in 2007, Fr. Cosgrove served as Chaplain at Mt. Carmel Carmelite Monastery and Chaplain at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City 2007-2014 In addition, he served in residence retirement at St. Boniface and St. Joseph's Parish in Sioux City.

Fr. Cosgrove was an avid supporter of education throughout the Sioux City Diocese and held a special fondness for Heelan High School and regularly attended their sporting events and other numerous activities. Above all, he was the center of his family and presided over many of their baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

He is survived by his brother, James Cosgrove of Sioux City; his sister, Kay Cosgrove Mahoney of Orange Park, Fla.; 33 nieces and nephews; 54 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and numerous great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Suzanne Cosgrove (Richard) Floeder, Patricia Cosgrove (Walter) Steere, Francis Joseph "Joe" (Ellen K.) Cosgrove, Eugene Thomas "Gene" (Joan) Cosgrove, Barbara Cosgrove (Harold) Sullivan, Lenore Cosgrove; three nephews: Luke Cosgrove, P.J. Cosgrove, and Tom Sullivan; brother-in-law, Mike Mahoney, and sister-in-law, Beverly Cosgrove.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor the life of Fr. Jerome Cosgrove can be made to Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools tuition assistance fund to help students receive a Heelan education which he was so proud of.
