Anthon Mayor, Lewis M. Foley, 76, died Wednesday morning of an apparent heart attack as he was being brought to a Sioux City hospital by ambulance. He was manager of the Walter Funeral Home, had been mayor of Anthon for the last seventeen years, and was prominent in civic and church activities.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Anthon with Rev. George Benjamin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of Walter Funeral Home.

Mayor Foley was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a 56-year member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Northwest Iowa Mayor's Association, a member and former officer of the Woodbury County Peace Officers Association, a 45-year member and former chief of the Anthon Volunteer Fire Department, a veteran of World War I, and a 50-year member of McNiff Post 389 American Legion at Anthon.

Mayor Foley was born February 28, 1894, at Matlock, Iowa. He moved to the Correctionville area with his parents as a small child. They moved to Anthon in 1906. He was a yard foreman for the Illinois Central Railroad at Sioux Falls, and section foreman for about ten years. Later he was an automobile salesman at the Trecker Ford Motor Company at Anthon and was proprietor of Foley's Market for six years.

For the past eleven years he had been manager of the Walter Funeral Home at Anthon. He also operated Foley Insurance Agency for a number of years. He married Catherine Chausse October 30, 1928, at Anthon.

Survivors include the widow, two sisters, Mrs. Josie Frey of Humphrey, Nebraska, and Mrs. Walter Suydan of Yucca Valley, California, and two brothers, John of Cherokee and Martin of Denver, Colorado.

Mayor Foley was a member of St. Joseph's Church, a 56-year member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Northwest Iowa Mayors Association, a member and former officer of the Woodbury County Peace Officer's Association, a 45-year member and former chief of the Anthon Volunteer Fire Department, a veteran of World War I, and a 50-year member of McNiff Post 389 American Legion at Anthon, and Mayor of Anthon for the past 17 years.

He moved to the Correctionville area with his parents as a small child and then moved to Anthon in 1906. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, 1970 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Anthon, with the Rev. George Benjamin officiating. Rosary was recited at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Anthon at 5 p.m. on Thursday July 2, 1970 by members of the parish and at 8:30 p.m. by the Knight of Columbus.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery with graveside military rites by the McNiff Post 389 American Legion of Anthon.

Pallbearers were Mavin Umbach, Earnest Jett, Dr. Ralph Danner, Donald Gothier, Jack McNamara, and Tom Cunningham. Honorary pallbearers were Mayors and Peace Officers of Woodbury County.
