WIDELY KNOWN STOCKMAN DIES

Alex Y. Weir, Operator of Stables Here for Many Years

Alex Y. Weir, 83, 4408 Perry Creek Road, retired stockman and horseman, died Thursday at a hospital after a two-week illness.

He was born February 3, 1963,(1863) at Duns Berwickshire, Scotland. In 1880 he went to Canada and in 1881 to LeMars, la. In 1906 he came to Sioux City and became a widely known owner and fancier of racing and carriage horses.

After conducting stables at LeMars for 26 years he moved them to Sioux City stock yards, who built him a big stable here. The Weir stables were one of the show places of the city and almost every notable that came, to Sioux City rode Mr. Weir's horses.

Mr. Weir's jumping horses beat some of the best in Canada and the United States. He retired from active work about 12 years ago.

He was a member of the Third Presbyterian church and a past exalted ruler of the Elks lodge at LeMars. He also held a life membership in the Elks there.

Survivors are two sons, Harold A. and William both of Sioux City.

The body Was taken to Perasso Bros, funeral home.

Funeral services for Alex Y. Weir, 83, 4408 Perry Creek Road, retired stockman and horseman who died Thursday at a hospital after a two-week illness, will be held at 11 a. m. today in Perasso Bros. chapel. Rev. Warren Martin, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, will Officiate. Burial will be in a LeMars cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Young, W. Leslie Haley, Horace Clark, Ted Forney, E. Elmer Steinbeck and E. K. Greene.
