DENTIST FOR 50 YEARS DIES HERE Dr.

Dr. Robert W. Miller, 93, Expires at Home After illness

A practicing dentist in Sioux City for over 50 years and one of the oldest practicing dentists in the area, Dr. Robert W. Miller, 93, died Wednesday evening in his home at 2101 Douglas Street after a brief illness.

Born December 1849, in a Wolf Creek, W. Va. log cabin, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Miller. He homesteaded near Worthington, Minn., at the age of 21, forming a farming partnership there with his brother-in-law, Dr. E. Bedford, a dentist.

Dr. Miller became interested in his brother-in-law's practice and served his preceptorship under him after they came to Sioux City. Dr. Miller came here in 1879 and began his practice in 1880. He was granted the 171st license to be issued in Iowa.

He married Clara Merrick November 11, 1875, in Worthington. She died in December 1921.

Dr. Miller was a deacon emeritus of the First Congregational church at the time of his death and a member of Sioux City, regional and national dental societies. He was active in church work here.

After his retirement in 1935, Dr. Miller was active in gardening and flower growing, owning several plots of ground near his home.

His three sons, Dr. Robert E., Dr. Ralph M. and Dr. Horace E. had been practicing with their father in what was believed to be the only partnership of its kind on the continent.

Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Joseph M. Lewis and Mrs. Paul D. Cook, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. H. M. Barrett of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Dr. J. H. A. Miller of Alderson, W. Va.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the West-Heaton funeral home. Funeral arrangements are pending.
