Negro Junkman Is Found Dead Near City Dump

George Hodges, 65-year-old Negro junkman, 1410 Center Street, was found dead near his pushcart early Wednesday morning at a city dump, 512 River Road.

The body was found by Erwin Coffey, who resides along the river at "the foot of Nebraska street. Investigating officers said that the man probably had been dead about three hours.

Coroner J. E. Swnson said on first examination that Hodges might have died of natural causes. He withheld further comment pending the completion of his investigation.

Hodges was a familiar figure on downtown streets as he pushed his long cart, filled with old bottles, wood and paper.

The body was taken to the Rutledge funeral home.
