Edward R. Monson, 90, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by Tyrian Lodge 508 A.F. A.M., at the funeral home.

Mr. Monson was born July 24, 1910, in Lehigh, Iowa, the son of Arne M. and Lillian May (Erickson) Monson. He attended school in Lehigh.

He married Hertha S. Engel on June 30, 1949, in Sioux City. He was employed in the beef and pork industry for many years and had been a consultant for Iowa Beef Processors. He purchased a ranch in Park Rapids, Minn., at the age of 70 and continued to raise and sell cattle until his death. His wife died June 8, 1997.

He was baptized in First Christian Church. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge 508 A.F.& A.M., Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, White Horse Mounted Patrol, and York Rite Bodies. He served as a Potentate in 1967 and was a former director and impresario of the Sioux City Court 124 Royal Order of Jesters. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying his Beechcraft Bonanza Aircraft.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth L. and his wife, Arlene of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Donald E. of Redwood Falls, Minn.; two daughters, Jean L. and her husband, Neal Aronson of Park Rapids, and Ruth Marie Kitts of Redwood Falls; a special companion, Helen Heaton of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Darrel Monson, Debra Duvick, Cheryl Whitford, Susan Newby, Bradley Archer, Valarie Smith, Hollie Wetzel and Vickie Kitts; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma MacDowell of Archie, Mo.; and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Monson of Marshall, Minn., and Alice Monson of Montrose, Colo.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Lyle, Dale and Wayne; and a sister, Edna Monson.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Wieland, Darrel Monson, Bradley Archer, Steve Newby, Ronald Kitts and Tim Smith.
