David J. Wagner, 47, of Ackley, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.

Services were held April 14 in the Ackley High School gymnasium, with the Revs. Tim Diehl and Jack Ritsema officiating. Burial was in Faith Presbyterian Cemetery in Ackley, under the direction of Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley.

Mr. Wagner was born July 27, 1953, in Sioux City, the son of Harold J. and Hazel Wagner Sr. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City, Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and South Dakota State University in Brookings. He wrestled for Augustana and was a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State.

He married Krista Meinders on Aug. 13, 1983, at Washington Reformed Church near Ackley.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Navy Wrestlers. He was involved in the CISM Games. He wrestled in the World Championships in Canada and was on the 1976 Olympic tryout team for wrestling. He was a three-time wrestling champion at the Iowa Games. He was an SFU coach to Germany and New Zealand. He was a wrestling coach for two years at West Harrison and spent six years as head wrestling coach at Eldora-New Providence School, where he was a physical education and health teacher. For the past 10 years, he was the wrestling coach at AGWSR. He was previously a coach of football, track, softball and volleyball.

He was a member of the Ackley American Legion. He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley. He had participated in RAGBRAI.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tyler and Hunter, both at home; a daughter Gabriel, at home; one daughter from a previous marriage, Dawn Wagner of Minneapolis, Minn.; his father and step-mother, Harold Sr. and Betty Wagner of Jefferson, S.D.; his mother and step-father, Hazel and Tom Brienzo of Sioux City; a sister. Barb Woolworth of Sioux City; and a brother, Harold Wagner Jr. of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his . father-in-law, Kenneth Meinders.
