Pierson Progress
31 January 1929

Sunday morning the shadow of death cast its gloom over this community when a message to relatives here conveyed the sad news of the death of Alma Benedix, 21, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Benedix of Waverly, Iowa, on January 27, 1929.

The news was a shock although the condition of her health had caused her parents some anxiety since she had the measles several years ago. At Thanksgiving she was forced to resign her position as teacher.

The cause of death was blood poisoning. She had suffered an attack of flu at Christmas time and on the Wednesday prior to her death, the glands of her throat began swelling, although there was no infection in the tonsils.

Alma was a former Pierson girl and has many friends here. She was born near Rock Branch January 29, 1907. She graduated with the Pierson High School class of 1924. After graduation her parents moved to Waverly where she was a student at Wartburg Academy, graduating there in 1926. The past two years she has been engaged as a teacher, first at Westgate and then in a school near Readlyn.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be in the Lutheran Church in Waverly Tuesday in charge of her pastor, Rev. Rausch, who also accompanied the body and friends to Pierson Wednesday. The body was taken to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Benedix, Sr. where in accordance with the request of the dead girl, short services were held today before going to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church where final services were held.

The body was laid to rest beside the brother in Fairfield Cemetery at Rock Branch. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Osborn Bros.

The daughter's death was a sad blow to the parents, both of who were ill at the time. Mr. Benedix suffered from the flu and was seriously threatened with mastoids while Mrs. Benedix had the misfortune to have her hand caught in a wringer. The distress caused by the painful accident and the strain of caring for the sick ones was too much for her strength and she was forced to take her bed.

Mrs. Benedix's sister, Mrs. Carl Petersen, went to Waverly last Thursday to assist in caring for the family and was present in their dark hour. William Hoppe and his sister-in-law, Mrs. William Flamme, a sister of Mrs. Benedix, left from Cherokee Monday for Waverly to accompany the family to Pierson.

Survivors include her parents and one sister, her brother died in early infancy, and besides these, her grandparents, uncles, aunts and other relatives survive.
