Rural School Teacher Dies at Age 85

Mrs. Charles Ashley, 85, Anthon, a former rural teacher, died Saturday at the Valley View Nursing Home at Correctionville, where she had resided for about one and one-half years.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church at Anthon. The Rev. Donald Harbor will officiate. Burial will be in the Rock Branch Cemetery under direction of the Walter Funeral Home of Anthon.

The former Mary L. Johnson, Mrs. Ashley was born May 27,1886, at Merrill, Iowa. She moved to Sioux City at age 7. In 1904, she began teaching in the rural schools of Wolf Creek Township in Woodbury County. She was married to Mr. Ashley Jan. 1, 1906, in Sioux City. Mr.

Mr. Ashley farmed northwest of Anthon and the couple moved into Anthon. when he retired. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Ashley was a member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Rock Branch Methodist Church, past president of the lady’s aid Society, a Sunday school teacher at the Rock Branch Church and a past secretary of the Wolf Creek Township School District.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin and John; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Bernice) Fey and Mrs. Bettie Adler, all of Anthon: 19 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Flint of Davenport, Iowa.
