Sarah J. (Mead) Ulven, 81, of Smithland, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2021 at her residence.

A Memorial Service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Smithland United Methodist Church in Smithland, with Lay Servant Anthony Bainbridge officiating. No luncheon will occur due to covid-19 concerns. Burial will follow in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery near Smithland.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service of Onawa.

Sarah Jane Ulven, daughter of Clark and Helen (Daniels) Mead was born July 22, 1940, at Smithland, Iowa Woodbury County. She was raised in the Smithland area and attended school at Smithland High School graduating in May of 1958.

On October 11, 1958, she married Chuck (Charles) Ulven in South Sioux City. To this union two sons were born, Clark and Dewey (Dennis) Ulven. They made their home in the Smithland area. Chuck passed away May 18, 2011 and she continued to live in Smithland. She worked at Knox Gelatin, Inc. for twenty-two years.

She most enjoyed her sons and grandchildren, attending as many of their school and sports functions as she could. Sarah enjoyed dancing, playing cards, sewing, and working on genealogy.

She is survived by her two sons, Clark (Jamila) of Sioux City, and Dewey of Salix; five grandsons and one granddaughter, Anthony “Tony” of Arkansas, Chris, Joey and Rachel Ulven of Sioux City, and Zach and Jacob Ulven of Salix; four great-grandsons, Charles Ulven of Arkansas, and Blaze, Axel and Lynx of Sioux City; one brother, Richard (Carmen) of Florida; one sister, Carol (Donnie) Larson of Smithland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; her father and mother, Clark and Helen (Daniels) Mead; sister, Pat (Bob) Moon; brother, David Mead; parental grandparents; Aaron and Lillie Coon; maternal grandparents, Walter and Mabel Daniels; an infant son; parents-in-law, Earl and Alma Ulven; and many fur babies.
