Ross C. “J” Johnson, Jr., 93, of Onawa, Iowa passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129, Onawa, Iowa. Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Ross Christian was born August 17, 1927 the son of Ross Johnson, Sr. and Mabel (Cole) Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Onawa, Iowa. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1949. Ross served during WWII.

Ross married Linda Mercer June 1, 1958 at the Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa. He started working for REC in 1955 until his retirement in 1989. Ross went to work at Design Homes in Salix, Iowa. He was a greens keeper at the Onawa Country Club until 2012. He then worked in maintenance for Wayne and Kathy Rock at the Trailer Court in Onawa, Iowa.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling, and water skiing. Spending time with Linda was his favorite past time.

He was a member of the David McNeill American Legion Post #129, of Onawa, Iowa. Ross was a member of the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa, where he served as a past Deacon.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Linda Johnson of Onawa, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; four sisters-in-law, Alice Cooper of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Sharon (Mike) DeVos of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Betty “Deb” (Gary) Derrick of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Elaine Vaughn of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; and many cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Johnson, Sr. and Mabel (Cole) Johnson; parents-in-law, John and Evelyn (Reeves) Mercer; grandparents; infant daughter, Elizabeth Ann; sister, Dolly (Harold) Maxwell, brother, Bill Johnson; sister, Mary Ann (Howard) Rogers; brother, Gerald “Pete” (Pat) Johnson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Walt Wendel; nephew, Gary Lee Cooper; and several other family members and friends.
