Helen Lorna Howe, 87, of Sioux City died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy battle with colon cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Third Presbyterian Church, with Jennifer Santer officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Helen was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Hornick, Iowa, the daughter of LaFayette and Mary (Hindman) Dowling. She was raised in the area and attended school in Salix, Iowa.

She married Edgar E. Howe on Feb. 3, 1939, in Vermillion, S.D. She worked at Sioux Bee Honey for more than 16 years, retiring, in 1986. Edgar died in 1971.

She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. She loved spending lots of time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting Afghans, playing cards, especially solitaire and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three sons, Lloyd Howe and his wife, Scarlett of Pocatello, Idaho, Gaylord Howe and his wife, Patricia of Puyallup, Wash., and Douglas Howe of Sergeant Bluff and his special friend, Nancy Muecke of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores Nordstrom of Sloan, Iowa; and a brother and his wife, Leonard "Boz" and Phyllis Dowling of Hornick, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ricky Howe; a grandson, Jeffrey Howe; and eight siblings, Mildred Sherman, Don Dowling, LaFayette Dowling, Hazel Kersey, Edith Kinnelly, Clifford Dowling, Bernyce McReynolds and Maxine Nystrom.

Pallbearers will be Melissa Howe, Kirk Howe, Gaylord Howe Jr., Chris Howe, Rodd Nordstrom and Brad Nordstrom.

Memorials may be directed to Third Presbyterian Church.
