Dr. John D. Deck

Formerly Sioux City -- Dr. John D. Deck, 65, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, after a courageous 16-month battle against pancreatic cancer.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, a private family Rosary and Mass will be held. The public is welcome to view the livestream of the Rosary and Mass on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. A public celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.

He was born in Sioux City to Paul and Marie Deck, the youngest of five sons.

John’s childhood years were adventurous and fun surrounded by his four brothers in Sioux City. As a child, his passion for the outdoors was fostered and further cultivated by countless trips to Woman Lake in Northern Minnesota and fishing expeditions to Canada with his brothers and father. He ultimately achieved the honorary distinction of Eagle Scout.

He graduated from North High School in 1974 in Sioux City. Carrying on his family’s strong Cornhusker legacy, he proudly attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, studying psychology with an aspiration to become a medical doctor. He was a member of Phi Gamma Beta. In December 1974, he met the love of his life, Ann McBride (Deck) in a comedic, serendipitous, blind date scenario, the perfect meet cute.

John and Ann were married shortly after graduation on May 26, 1978, and moved to Omaha, as John was accepted into the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Medicine. Upon graduating from UNMC, Dr. Deck completed his family practice residency at the Lincoln Medical Education Program in Lincoln, Nebraska followed by a short stint in Spencer, Iowa.

Upon returning to Lincoln in the summer of 1986, he practiced at the Lincoln Clinic and started his own private practice in January 1991. He loved raising his children in Lincoln, Neb. and attending Mass with his family. He was proud of his Catholic faith and the education his children received at St Joseph School and Pius X High School.

For over 30 years, he practiced family medicine on 70th and A Street in East Lincoln. Throughout his medical career he practiced with humility and grace, yet he was a pertinacious family health care provider who advocated for equality, respect and dignity. He was purposeful in his treatment of his patients and their continuity of care. Dr. Deck passionately loved medicine and helping his patients.

Dr. Deck embraced fatherhood and his promotion to grandfather wholeheartedly and cherished the innumerable moments with his five children and seven grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family in his and Ann’s most revered place, Woman Lake, a Slice of Heaven which breathed oxygen into his soul. He orchestrated many sing-alongs, firework shows, and campfires in Minnesota, earning the beloved nickname, “The King of Fireworks.” John created what fondly became known as “Deck Park” his meticulously landscaped acreage with 100’s of trees grown from seedlings from the Arbor Day Foundation. It was truly one of his prized passions, second only to his family.

Dr. John D. Deck is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ann E. Deck; five children, Christina (Jason) Harlow of Lincoln, Elizabeth (Alexis) Ranson of Houston, Texas, John (Siddhi Sawant) Deck of San Antonio, Texas, Thomas Deck of Omaha, and Emily (Luis) Anton of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Scott, Emery, Frances, Cora, Josephine, John Luis, and Fernando; four brothers, Paul (Prudence) Deck, Robert (Cynthia) Deck, William (Jan) Deck, James Deck all of Sioux City; sisters-in law, Jeanne McBride of Venice, Fla., Mary (Fred) Greenwald of Aztec, N.M., and Colleen (Ted) Ehrlichman of Sarasota, Fla.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marie Deck; and his granddaughter, Sabrina Anton.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorials be made to the PIus X Foundation, or the Arbor Day Foundation
