Died: At Smithland, Iowa, Sunday morning, Jas. Swain, aged 75 years and 4 months.

The deceased was born in Leicester, England. During the earlier period of his youth he spent on the sea, traveling with his father, who was an officer stationed in the East Indies. At the age of forty-two he came to the United States, and lived in the south until the breaking out of the war when he came north to Canada, where he met the wife who now mourns his loss, Miss Alice Ferrin. One child was born to them, Jas R. now an attorney at Greeley, Nebraska. In 1870 Mr. Swain and family came, to Iowa and took a homestead near Mapleton. He lived there two years when he came to Smithland where he has since resided. The funeral took place Monday forenoon from the family residence. Rev. D. P. Billings officiating.
