He married Rose Ann Barbee on April 20, 1957, and together they raised six children.

For many years, he operated a TV repair business out of the home. He continued to work part-time into his eighties.
He enjoyed following the activities of his children and grandchildren, coaching baseball, playing golf, bowling, playing cards with friends, and tinkering in the garage.
Left to honor his memory are his wife of 63 years, Rose Ann; children, Joyce (Rich) Webb of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Gerald Jr. (Teresa) of Mesa, Ariz., Nancy (Terry) Ruehle of Nederland, Texas, Dale of Omaha, and daughter-in-law, Deanna Mayo of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl Mayo-Jay; a son, Steven Mayo; his brothers, John, Donald, Earl (Barney), James and Douglas; and three sisters, Joyce Mayo, Louise Christensen and Blanche Flaa.
